San Beda’s Robert Bolick gets his due as 2017’s top college basketball player

MANILA, Philippines—For leading the San Beda Red Lions to the NCAA championship last year, veteran guard Robert Bolick has been recognized as the Player of the Year in the 2018 Chooks-to-Go Collegiate Basketball Awards on Thursday night at The Bayleaf Hotel in Intramuros.The 6-foot-1 guard was the undisputed leader of the Red Lions when they roared their way to the NCAA Season 93 title, their second straight and 21st overall.However, Bolick missed out on any individual award, as he was disqualified from being chosen to the Mythical Team due to a controversial ejection in an elimination round game against College of Saint Benilde, then was edged out by teammate Donald Tankoua for the finals MVP award.While Bolick, 21, is not one to look for personal glory, there is no doubt that he played a huge role in their title series against a Lyceum squad bannered by Most Valuable Player CJ Perez.Bolick came through for his team when it mattered most, scoring seven of his 24 points in the last two minutes of Game 1, then scoring seven of his 22 markers with under five minutes left in Game 2.Thus, the scribes from print and online media who organized the event deemed him worthy of the highest honor of the past season.Bolick is the first Red Lion and first NCAA standout to be named Player of the Year. He follows in the footsteps of La Salle&#x27;s Jeron Teng and Ben Mbala, Ateneo&#x27;s Kiefer Ravena, and FEU&#x27;s Mac Belo as winners of the award.Joining Bolick in this year&#x27;s Mythical Team are La Salle&#x27;s Mbala, Lyceum&#x27;s Perez, and Ateneo&#x27;s Matt Nieto and Thirdy Ravena.Meanwhile, San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez and Ateneo mentor Tab Baldwin will be feted as coaches of the Year for leading their respective schools to the NCAA and UAAP titles.Special awards will also be given to women&#x27;s basketball legend Afril Bernardino of National University, UE scoring machine Alvin Pasaol, and the Lyceum Pirates who completed their transformation from league cellar-dweller to a legitimate title contender.<div>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</div>
