People have gone to social media to share their thoughts, as well as pictures and video, of the violence that transpired during the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifying game between Gilas Pilipinas and Australia at Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan on Monday night.

While some have theories about what led to tensions bubbling to the surface, broadcast footage being circulated online seems to show exactly what triggered the melee.

Prior to the Daniel Kickert forearm shiver that decked RR Pogoy, Pogoy tried to drive to the basket with Chris Goulding fronting him and wearing him like a glove.

Pogoy appeared to make a fake pass, a swinging motion that could have smacked Goulding in the face if the backpedaling Goulding didn't pull his head back.

Pogoy and Goulding then engaged in a sumo-type hit that floored the Australian shooting guard.

Goulding on the floor, Kickert stepped in and threw the vicious left forearm that leveled Pogoy.

“The foul of Pogoy on Goulding was an offensive foul, and it was a basketball play,” Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said.

“But he (Kickert) was the one who came in and decked Pogoy (for the) fifth time.”

Here's another angle showing the Kickert hit.

Reyes and Philippines basketball officials complained that Kickert was taunting Gilas as early as the pregame warm-ups, a psych-war that went overboard, Reyes said.

When they were interviewed, the same officials alluded to the Australians removing sponsorship decals at the arena as one of the factors that ticked off the hosts.

Robbie Puno, vice chairman of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, said Australia “disrespected our courts and started pulling out the decals of our sponsors.”

“They had absolutely no right to do that,” Puno said.
