Richard Esguerra, <a href="https://sports.abs-cbn.com/uaap/basketball/photos">ABS-CBN Sports</a></figcaption></figure></div>MANILA, Philippines — (UPDATE 2) In their first encounter against their former head coach, the De La Salle University Green Archers emerged victorious.The Green Archers clobbered the University of Santo Tomas (UST) -- now mentored by former La Salle coach Aldin Ayo -- by 27 points, 99-72, on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.The result put the Green Archers back on the winning track after a loss to University of the Philippines in their previous game. They now have a 3-2 win-loss record.Meanwhile, it was the third straight defeat for Ayo and the Growling Tigers, who are now 1-4 in the season.This marked the first meeting between La Salle and UST in the UAAP since Ayo left the Taft-based school in December 2017, after leading the Green Archers to a title in Season 79 and a runner-up finish in Season 80.Taking over Ayo’s post in La Salle was his longtime assistant, Louie Gonzalez, who nevertheless stressed after the game that it was nothing personal for him to have gotten a triumph over his good friend.“Alam naman natin ang buhay ng coaches,” said Gonzalez. “Whether it’s Aldin or other coaches, ganoon pa rin naman ang treatment ko.”Justine Baltazar was superb once more, firing a career-high 22 points on top of 10 rebounds and three blocks. Aljun Melecio had 19 points, and four other players reached double figures as La Salle made 47.76% of their shots in the game.“The primary game plan for today was for us to play 40 minutes na composed,” said Gonzalez. “We played 40 minutes at the highest level. He scored 17 points in the first half, making 6-of-7 field goals to power his team to a 54-34 advantage.The Growling Tigers trimmed the deficit to 15 points, 60-45, midway through the third period but it was the closest they could get. La Salle soon restored a 20-point advantage, thanks to veteran Andrei Caracut whose lay-up off a Melecio dime made it 70-49.The Green Archers went on to lead by as much as 30 points, 96-66, and the game appeared headed to a quiet end until the final 3.3 seconds, when La Salle’s Miguel Corteza and UST’s Ira Bataller got tangled up near the La Salle bench, and were subsequently called for double fouls.Corteza was also given an unsportsmanlike foul for his troubles. The Tigers made the most of the bonus possession, with Lee nailing a triple as time expired to peg the final score.Renzo Subido had 16 points, Lee and Zach Huang added 13, but rookie ace CJ Cansino was held to only 7 points on 3-of-11 shooting while committing five of UST’s 14 turnovers. The Growling Tigers made only 31.58% of their shots, and were out-rebounded, 56-40.UST was playing sans big man Steve Akomo, who was out for the game due to food poisoning.
