Swimmer produces PH's first gold in Asian Para Games

Simon Bruty for OIS/IOC via AFP.</figcaption></figure></div><p><strong>(UPDATED)</strong> Para swimmer Ernie Gawilan made history for the Philippines on Sunday night in Jakarta, as he delivered the country&#x27;s first ever gold medal in the Asian Para Games.</p><p>Gawilan ruled the men&#x27;s 200-meter individual medley SM7, finishing with a time of 2:52.43.</p><p>He finished way ahead of Chinese-Taipei&#x27;s Chen Liang-da (2:55.9) and India&#x27;s Jadhav Suyash Narayan (2:56.51) in the event held at the Gelora Bung Karno Aquatic Stadium. </p><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Congratulations<br/>Ernie Gawilan<br/>Gold Medalist<br/>200M Individual Medley (Swimming)<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/LabanATLETANGPILIPINO?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#LabanATLETANGPILIPINO</a><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/parasainangbayan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#parasainangbayan</a><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/TeamPHIsaAsianParaGames2018?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#TeamPHIsaAsianParaGames2018</a> <a href="https://t.co/LHMDnvQvMC">pic.twitter.com/LHMDnvQvMC</a></p>— Philippine Sports Commission (@psc_gov) <a href="https://twitter.com/psc_gov/status/1049176219994882049?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 8, 2018</a></blockquote><div><script async="" src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charSet="utf-8" type="text/javascript"></script></div><p>On Monday afternoon, Kim Ian Chi made it two golds for the Philippines by ruling the mixed singles TPB10 event in ten-pin bowling.</p><p>Chi averaged 231.30, ahead of Korea&#x27;s Hong Wonju (229.80) and Thailand&#x27;s Raiwin Phissitthanakul (221.70) and Singapore&#x27;s Tan Swang Hee (221.70).</p><p>The efforts of Gawilan and Chi ensured that it will be mission accomplished for the Philippine contingent in the Para Games, as they headed to Jakarta hoping to <a href="https://news.abs-cbn.com/sports/09/29/18/paralympic-medalist-josephine-medina-leads-ph-delegation-to-asian-para-games">improve on their five-silver, five-bronze output</a> from Incheon, South Korea in 2014.</p><p>Gawilan also added a silver medal to the Philippines&#x27; tally, as he finished second to Singapore&#x27;s Toh Wei Soong in the men&#x27;s 50-meter freestyle SM7 with a time of 31.93 seconds. The Singaporean topped the podium with a time of 29.01 seconds.</p><p>Narayan also earned bronze in the event (32.16 seconds).</p><p>Meanwhile, Achelle Guion also produced a silver for the Philippines in the women&#x27;s 45-kg powerlifting. She lifted 67-kg, holding off Kazakhstan&#x27;s Soludkhina Alina (66-kg) for second place.</p><p>China&#x27;s Guo Lingling lifted 115-kg to set the world record.</p><p>The Philippines also grabbed a bronze in the men&#x27;s 100-meter backstroke courtesy of Gary Bejino, and another bronze in the men&#x27;s time trial of para cycling through Arthus Bucay.</p><p>As of 7 p.m., the Philippines is currently 9th in the medal table. </p><p>China tops the list, having already collected 22 golds, 8 silvers, and 14 bronzes through the first two days of competition.</p><div><strong>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</strong></div>
