Azkals fall to Myanmar for first loss in 2019 SEA Games

<p>MANILA, Philippines—The Philippines suffered a tough 2-1 defeat to Myanmar in the men&#x27;s football competition of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games at Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Wednesday, dealing a blow to the hosts&#x27; hopes of advancing to the semifinals.</p><p>Coming off a 1-1 draw against Cambodia on Monday night, the Under-22 Azkals were in high spirits and appeared ready for a breakthrough against the fourth-placers in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.</p><p>But they gave up a goal to Win Naing Tun in the 79th minute, as he slipped past Amani Aguinaldo inside the box to put Myanmar ahead.</p><p>It was a frustrating result for the Azkals, who had dominated possession in the second half and came close to scoring several times.</p><p>&quot;It&#x27;s not easy to lose the game this way,&quot; said Azkals coach Goran Milojevic. &quot;We had many chances, but we had some problems with the players who were tired and got cramps. Myanmar improved to four points, getting their first win after a draw against Malaysia on opening night.</p><p>The Azkals opened the game on a bright note, with Stephan Schrock creating chances early. Yrick Gallantes was unlucky not to have scored in the ninth minute, as his header soared above the crossbar. Another attempt by Gallantes just moments later went straight to the goalkeeper.</p><p>Myanmar broke through in the 17th, though. The visitors&#x27; nifty passing left the Azkals&#x27; defense scrambling, and that led to a Aung Kaung Mann firing the opening goal past Anthony Pinthus.</p><p>Myanmar were more patient the rest of the way, and their build-up led to a golden chance in the 40th but could not convert. The Filipinos got their chance minutes later, with a defensive miscue by Myanmar leading to an opportunity for Chima Uzoka. Unfortunately for the Azkals, he could not shake off his defender, and the ball was cleared away harmlessly.</p><p>The Filipinos finally got the breakthrough they were searching for in the 45th minute. Baas nearly doubled his tally in the 60th minute, firing a shot just wide off another Chung pass. Gallantes had his own opportunity in the 67th, which was collected by the Myanmar keeper.</p><p>Pinthus came up with a huge save against Mann in the 73rd, but the Filipinos were left shaking their heads just five minutes later when Tun flicked the match-winner past the goalkeeper.</p><p>The Azkals kept pressing, and had one more chance in the 90th off Schrock&#x27;s free kick. His attempt went straight into Naing Sann Satt, however.</p><p>The Philippines return to action on Friday against Malaysia, the the 2017 SEA Games runner-up.</p><p>In the second game, Cambodia crushed Timor Leste, 5-0, to take the top spot in the group.</p><p>For more sports coverage, visit the <a href="http://sports.abs-cbn.com">ABS-CBN Sports website</a>.</p>
