UAAP MediaUST guard Tacky Tacatac puts up a shot against UP in the UAAP Season 87 women's basketball tournament, Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. UAAP MediaMANILA -- Veteran guard Tacky Tacatac came alive in the fourth quarter to lead University of Santo Tomas to an 84-60 demolition of the University of the Philippines in the UAAP Season 87 women's basketball tournament, Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Tacatac scored 14 of her 20 points in the final quarter -- her best performance of the season -- to help the defending champions improve to 5-1 in the tournament.

Kent Pastrana continued her stellar play, adding 21 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, along with nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Overall, UST knocked down 13 triples in the game, with Tacatac accounting for six of their makes from deep.

"Sana tuloy-tuloy na yung pagputok niya. Sabi nga, a shooter will always be a shooter. It will give us more space in our offense kasi talagang nakatutok yung defenders kay Tacky," said UST coach Haydee Ong.

"Kahit hindi nagshu-shoot si Tacky, yung spacing namin will have room to operate for Kent and doon sa mga players ko na nagda-drive," she added.

The Fighting Maroons fell behind by 17 points in the first half but got within four points, 55-51, in the third quarter after a 24-11 run.

But they could not complete the comeback, with buckets from Bridgette Santos, Tacatac, and Karylle Sierba highlighting a 17-2 UST counter-run in the final period that helped them push the lead to 21 points, 76-55, with over four minutes to go.

The Tigresses would lead by as many as 28 points, 84-56, off a triple by Brenna Pineda.

The rookie Sierba finished with 11 points, six assists, three rebounds, and two steals, while UAAP Season 85 MVP Eka Soriano had five points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

The Growling Tigresses aim to close the first round on a high note against a struggling Far Eastern University side on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

On the other hand, UP, missing Gilas Women guard Camille Nolasco for the second straight game due to an ankle sprain, dropped to a 2-4 record, leaving them in solo fifth place in the standings.

Kaye Pesquera led the Fighting Maroons in the losing effort with 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Louna Ozar and Christie Bariquit contributed 14 points each.

Achrissa Maw, who had averaged a team-high 18.8 points over the previous five games, was limited to just four points on 2-of-7 shooting but still managed to grab 13 rebounds and two steals.

The Fighting Maroons will look to break a two-game skid when they face De La Salle University to conclude their first-round campaign on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the same venue in Pasay.
