Photo by Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">The UE Red Warriors celebrating Wello Lingolingo’s buzzer-beater against the Adamson Soaring Falcons, October 6, 2024, at the Mall of Asia Arena. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — University of the East continued its rise in UAAP men’s basketball on Sunday.</p><p>Wello Lingolingo powered the Red Warriors into its fifth straight win to end the first round of Season 87 with a 5-2 record, currently No.3 in the standings, and head coach Jack Santiago shared that this was a matter of his troops living up to the character that they have been building this year.  </p><p>&quot;Ang maganda dito sa team namin, yung character nandoon na,&quot; he told a few reporters outside their dugout at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay following their victory against Adamson University. </p><p>&quot;Yung character na ayaw nilang matalo, andyan. And sinabi ko sa kanila before we entered the court, let&#x27;s play this game for the crowd. Because for the first time, lagi nauubusan ako ng ticket. Pag umu-order ako, sold out lagi yung ticket namin,&quot; he added. </p><p>This is UE’s best start in almost two decades, with the Recto-based team previously sweeping Season 70’s elimination rounds in 2007. Their win, according to Coach Jack, is their way to repay the support that their community has been giving them. </p><p>&quot;I&#x27;m so grateful doon sa school community, because just imagine, you spend time, you spend money buying tickets. Kasi parang binibigyan ako ng big responsibility. But of course, sabi ko nga, lagi ko ito sinasabi sa mga boys, in life, there is always pressure,&quot; he said. </p><p>&quot;Sinasabi ko sa kanila, we are part of the history already, but of course, hindi tayo pwedeng ma-satisfy,&quot; added Santiago, saying that it may even be the reason why they showed struggles in the first part of their game against the Soaring Falcons. </p><p>&quot;Baka kasi yung may mga, nakikita ko naman yung mga players ko during practices and yung body language sila, so maybe there was pressure, medyo nape-pressure na rin kanina,&quot; he explained.</p><p>How will they be handling this? Aside from embracing pressure, the most important thing to keep in mind for UE, said Coach Jack, is to understand that they have not achieved anything yet despite their impressive start to Season 87.  </p><p>&quot;It&#x27;s a matter of kung paano ia-accept yung pressure na yan, and sinabi ko nga sa kanila, we enjoy the victory, we&#x27;re part of the history, 5-2, pero let&#x27;s be humble. By Tuesday, we go back to practice with 0-0 on the standings.&quot;</p><p>&quot;Hindi ko palalampasin yung may nakita tayong players na very relaxed or satisfied.  Wala pa, 0-0 pa. Wala pa tayong na-prove na anything. It&#x27;s still a long way, seven more games. So, back to zero, back to the drawing board kami,&quot; he emphasized. </p><p>&quot;We need to do something new para doon sa second round.&quot;</p><p>But if there’s another factor that can help them more in facing tougher competition in Round 2, it would be something that has worked for the Red Warriors even through their down years — staying together and playing as one no matter the result. </p><p>&quot;Meron tayong nakikitang players na medyo mahiyain, meron ding makapal ang mukha, pero ako kasi, lagi kong sinasabi na: We lose together, we win together,&quot; he said. &quot;Ayoko nung masama laro mo kaya malungkot ka dyan. Stand up.
