Japan's Takuma Inoue retained his WBA bantamweight title after stopping Filipino challenger Jerwin Ancajas on Saturday night at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan.

A vicious body shot from Inoue forced Ancajas to his knees in the ninth round, and the Filipino was unable to beat the count.

Inoue, the brother of unbeaten champion Naoya, improved to 19-1 in his career. It was only the fifth time that he won by knockout. He has now won six straight matches since suffering his first professional loss to Nordine Oubaali in November 2019.

For the 32-year-old Ancajas, it was his third loss in his last four fights. The Filipino had been aiming to become a two-weight champion had he been successful, but instead lost via stoppage for the first time in his professional career.

This marked the first time that Ancajas had been in action since June 2023, when he stopped Wilner Soto in a match in Minnesota.

The Filipino had been competitive despite the long layoff, and teed off against Inoue in the fourth round. But he absorbed some tough body shots in the ensuing rounds, and a pair of big right hands by the champion in the ninth dropped him to the canvas.

Ancajas now has a 34-4-2 win-loss-draw record.

Another Filipino in Jonas Sultan also suffered a knockout loss on Saturday night.

Sultan was knocked out by up-and-coming Japanese fighter Riku Masuda in the very first round of their bantamweight bout, also at the Kokugikan Arena.

It was a tough loss for Sultan who arrived in Japan just two days before the fight from the United States. He fell to 19-7 in his career.
