MANILA — Far Eastern University finally returned to the win column of UAAP Season 86 on Saturday.

The Lady Tamaraws emerged victorious over Adamson University in straight sets at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, and head coach Manolo Refugia said that this win was a result of FEU’s eagerness to end their two-game slump.

“Talagang gigil kaming makabawi from dalawang sunod na pagkatalo, ‘yung isa, heartbreaking pa, the rookie coach told reporters, citing their defeats against National University and University of Sto. Tomaas.

“Pero ayun, na-execute naman namin ‘yung pinag-aralan namin, ‘yung mga baon namin, naipakita namin ‘yung mga baon kaya naging maganda [performance namin],” he continued.

FEU dominated Adamson in attack points (50-30) and also committed fewer errors (18-15), while another vital factor for the Lady Tams was the performance of rookie foreign student-athlete (FSA) Faida Bakanke.

Bakanke, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, played her best game so far in her young UAAP career, putting up 14 points -- 13 from attacks and one from a block -- as well as eight digs.

“First, I’ll say thank you to the coaches and also to the system the coaches gave to us,” said Bakanke, who will be turning 21 on March 27th. “We lost two games and this game, we said we must have determination,” she continued. “We said we’ll come back strong in this game and we did well.”

Bakanke then went on to praise the Lady Tamaraws’ coaching staff who has helped her adjust during her stay in Morayta.

“I’m very happy. My performances from before to now are much better because the coaches are adjusting for me and telling me [how to adjust to] the system,” she explained.

And with Bakanke slowly finding her groove with FEU, Refugia and the whole team are now hoping to slowly turn their fortunes as the first round nears its end.

“Tine-take namin ‘yung mga games namin one game at a time,” Refugia bared.

“Naka-focus kami nitong huli sa Adamson. Right after nung NU, focus agad sa Adamson, tapos ngayon Ateneo. Kailangang mapag-aralan ulit namin kasi maganda rin ‘yung ginagalaw nila at ma-execute ulit namin ‘yung dapat ma-execute na may proper mindset,” he added.

They will face the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Sunday, 2 PM, at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
