He may have been sleepless, but Carlos Yulo was also relaxed and "chill" during the vault finals of the men's artistic gymnastics in the 2024 Paris Olympics on Sunday night.

A day after winning the Philippines' first gold medal in Paris, Yulo soared his way into a second gold, ruling yet another event and cementing his place in Philippine history books.

"Kanina po parang all out na po talaga ako," Yulo told reporters after the event, his gold medal gleaming around his neck.

"Kahit ano mangyari, I'm grateful na already. Hindi pa nagsisimula rin 'yung competition, I know may mga challenges kasi nga kahapon, hindi rin ako nakatulog maayos," he revealed.

"Kasi, feeling ko 'yung nerves ko, hyped pa rin. Pinipilit ko matulog, pero 'pag pumipikit ako, hindi talaga ako makatulog po. So I have to take a lot of naps po bago mag-competition."

Already the toast of the nation with his triumph in the floor exercise, Yulo doubled the Philippines' medal tally when he scored an average of 15.116 for his two vaults in the finals -- first, a Ri Se Gwang and then a Kasamatsu double twist.

He held his breath when Artur Davtyan performed last, but the Armenian's score of 14.966 was only enough for silver.

Yulo's victory in the vault came as a bit of a surprise because the Filipino gymnast previously revealed that he had some struggles in sticking his landings during training. But his emotional triumph the day before in the floor exercise greatly helped, as Yulo approached his second apparatus final with a clear mind.

"Feeling ko nakatulong din po 'yung kahapon. Relaxed na ako and chill lang," said Yulo. "Parang nagte-training lang po talaga. As in, hindi ako kinabahan. Walang pressure at all."

"Like, just there to have fun also. Ma-savor 'yung moment and i-soak in lahat. Kasi parang ano, all out na, last na 'to, let's do it," he added.

With two golds in the bag and incentives piling in from home, Yulo is feeling overwhelmed and grateful.

"Unbelievable talaga," he said. "Ang hope ko lang po today and wish na maging healthy and magandang performance lang po talaga 'yung inano ko, and walang maaksidente sa amin. And, 'di ko po inexpect na maggo-gold medal po ako, kasi medyo na-relax din po ako kahapon eh. Kasi, parang nakuha ko na po."

"But God is really great," said Yulo. "I'm so blessed by Him, and I'm well protected and guided po. Sobrang thankful and grateful po sa Kaniya, na hindi Niya kami pinabayaan lahat." -- with a report from Dyan Castillejo, POC Media/ABS-CBN News
