PBA Images "/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">NorthPort&#x27;s Joshua Munzon soars for a layup against Barangay Ginebra in their PBA Season 49 Commissioner&#x27;s Cup game, January 8, 2025 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. <em>PBA Images </em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA -- Showcasing the type of grit that has pushed his team to the top of the league standings, NorthPort&#x27;s Joshua Munzon battled through cramps to make big plays down the stretch of their crucial showdown against Barangay Ginebra.</p><p>Determined to deliver a statement against the Gin Kings, Munzon and the Batang Pier proved that they are for real as they held on for a 119-116 victory.</p><p>Not only did NorthPort improve to 7-1 to tighten their grip on the No. 1 spot, but they also ended a 14-game losing streak against Ginebra that dates back to 2019.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2025/1/8/pba-northport-tightens-grip-on-top-spot-by-overcoming-ginebra-2207">READ: NorthPort tightens grip on top spot by overcoming Ginebra</a></div><p>Starring in the triumph was Munzon, who nailed a huge three-pointer for a 117-109 NorthPort lead with 1:10 to play, having checked back into the game for Arvin Tolentino when their main man fouled out.</p><p>Later, Munzon -- who had to be treated for cramps at the sidelines -- made a split at the line to restore order and keep the Gin Kings at bay.</p><p>&quot;He&#x27;s a fighter. He wanted to go back and finish the game,&quot; NorthPort coach Bonnie Tan said of the Fil-Am shooting guard/small forward, who produced 27 points, six assists and two steals to complement import Kadeem Jack&#x27;s 32-16 and Tolentino&#x27;s 29.</p><p>Munzon&#x27;s gutsy effort in that drought-ending victory versus Ginebra earned him the nod as the PBA Press Corps-Pilipinas Live Player of the Week for the period Jan. 5 to 12.</p><p>The 6-foot-4 Fil-Am was the first recipient for 2025 of the weekly honor handed by the members of the media regularly covering the PBA beat, besting the other outstanding performers like teammate Tolentino and TNT&#x27;s RR Pogoy and Calvin Oftana.</p><p>NorthPort will have a bigger target on its back from here on but Munzon is confident that they will be ready.</p><p>&quot;We&#x27;ve kinda grown over these eight games, being able to close out games when it&#x27;s tight and sticking together, getting stops and playing in crunch time like that. But you know, when the game gets going back and forth like that, it&#x27;s pretty fun to be out there.
