Photo by Angela Davocol/NCAA Philippines.MANILA — Allen Liwag has outshone his contemporaries in NCAA men’s basketball for the second straight year.</div>The 6-foot-6 bruising big man of College of Saint Benilde was named Season 101 Most Valuable Player (MVP) after another dominant campaign, one he powered through despite dealing with injuries.Liwag averaged 15.7 points, nine rebounds, two assists, and one block in the eliminations, edging out Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s Titing Manalili and San Beda University’s Janti Miller for the league’s top individual honor.Liwag appeared in only seven games due to a left shoulder injury and dengue, but he met the minimum 50 percent requirement of games played in the eliminations to remain eligible.Meanwhile, Manalili was named both Rookie of the Year and Freshman of the Year after emerging as the NCAA’s top first-year player.The 6-foot-1 Cebuano averaged 13.8 points, 9.11 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 steals for the Knights, who reached the championship round for the first time in three years.Another standout rookie in San Sebastian’s Jhuniel Dela Rama was named Defensive Player of the Year after posting averages of 13.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.9 assists.Liwag, Manalili, and Dela Rama were also named to the Mythical Five, joined by Miller and Letran veteran Kevin Santos.The 6-foot-4 rookie from the Bay Area averaged 20.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 17 games for the Red Lions, who are a win away from clinching the Season 101 title. Santos, meanwhile, posted 10.9 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 assists.Dela Rama, Santos, and Liwag were also named to the All-Defensive Team alongside Mapua University’s Cyrus Nitura and Jose Rizal University’s Ivan Panapanaan.Lastly, Arellano University’s Renzo Abiera was named Most Improved Player after leading the Chiefs to the quarterfinals with averages of 10.7 points and 2.7 rebounds.
