Paige Javier, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA -- Chicago Bulls legend and former NBA Most Valuable Player Derrick Rose felt the love from Filipino fans in his first visit to Manila since 2013. It may be a different year and new setting, but Rose said it&#x27;s definitely the same kind of Filipino love and warmth he experienced.Rose was greeted by dozens of cheering fans at an exclusive event for a brand in Makati City on Thursday afternoon.  &quot;I&#x27;m loving it. I&#x27;m loving it right now. Yeah, yeah. I feel like a kid, again, being able to be in this market, seeing all the love, feeling all the love, the support. It&#x27;s unreal. And having my family here, it&#x27;s not like it, you know what I mean?&quot; he told ABS-CBN News in an interview.Rose even played interactive games with lucky fans, including Gilas Pilipinas players RJ Abarrientos and Camille Clarin, as well as PBA star Von Pessumal.Gilas Pilipinas player and Barangay Ginebra star Scottie Thompson also got a chance to interact with his fellow brand ambassador.Rose was all smiles from the moment he walked out, taking time to talk to fans, sign autographs and take photographs. He even gave shoes to a lucky fan.The NBA star had a question and answer portion with some members of the media, where he talked about his fond memories in the Philippines, advice to young players and those struggling in life.&quot;I remember when we were last here, it was just bananas. We&#x27;re upstairs in the hotel room, you go downstairs it&#x27;s packed. That&#x27;s something I cherish, that&#x27;s something my kids they see and they cherish,&quot; Rose said.The Chicago Bulls legend also took part in a live podcast where he recounted his early days in Englewood, Chicago. Rose was the youngest of four children, raised through &#x27;tough love&#x27; by their mom.&quot;I really didn&#x27;t know that I wanted to play basketball for a living when I was younger, but I had a pure love for the game. So the toughness came from me fighting my friends, being outside all day, figuring things out as a young man in the inner city, being in places that I shouldn&#x27;t have been, doing the various things, but never really didn&#x27;t get caught. But coming back home and understanding that like I was fortunate enough to come back home every night,&quot; Rose said.&quot;I had to learn discipline at an early age. I knew with the teams that I was playing on that we wanted to win. So that&#x27;s what sports plays a huge part. Where in sports, you learn all these great principles from sports,&quot; he added.<div> </div><div>ROSE ON JERSEY RETIREMENT</div>Last September 2024, Rose announced his retirement after 16 years in the NBA. To honor the Chicago native, the Bulls said they will raise his jersey to the rafters January next year. Still, still unreal. Still didn&#x27;t take it in yet until that moment. There&#x27;s something that you really didn&#x27;t ask for. I didn&#x27;t ask for that coming into the league. You really didn&#x27;t, or I didn&#x27;t,&quot; Rose said on what the honor means to him.&quot;Kids now, they think about signature shoes. They think about jersey sales. They think about so many things. I just thought about just making it, how my game was going to translate once I got to the league. Was I going to get used to the speed of the game? Little things like that,&quot; he shared.Rose said his perspective of the game changed when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee last April 2012. He said he&#x27;s focused on giving back and helping grow the game.&quot;When I tore my ACL, I didn&#x27;t know what to expect, but I knew that I wasn&#x27;t going to quit. I knew that at the same time, I had to be very mindful of my body and know that at that time,&quot; he said when he took a year off.&quot;I made sure that I attacked my rehabs. And I knew once I got healthy that I was going to be able to get to year 15 by being myself and listening to myself. But I couldn&#x27;t get rushed. If I would have came back a day early or came back a day early on any of my injuries, I wouldn&#x27;t be at where I&#x27;m at right now because I would have listened to someone else or someone else would have forced me. I feel like these kids got their own name, oh got their own identity and individuality,&quot; Rose initially said. &quot;A younger guy? It would be [Memphis guard] Ja [Morant].&quot;Rose also shared his take on the &#x27;greatest of all time&#x27; or GOAT discussion, where he identified Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan and two-time NBA champion Isiah Thomas.&quot;I gotta go with MJ because of what he did for my city. And the second one is Isiah Thomas because he stood on MJ. He was the only guy at 6&#x27;1, 6&#x27;2. Isiah Thomas that played for Detroit from Chicago. He beat Magic [Johnson], he beat [Larry] Bird, he beat MJ all in their prime at 6&#x27;3 and MJ had to beat him to get to the championship so those are my two,&quot; he said.The former NBA MVP last visited the Philippines in 2013. But after this return over a decade in the making, Rose said it will definitely not be the last.
