Photo by Jose Raphael Gonzales, ABS-CBN News Intern."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">University of Santo Tomas’ wingman Amiel Acido during the Growling Tigers’ practice at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, September 1, 2025. <em>Photo by Jose Raphael Gonzales, ABS-CBN News Intern.</em></span></span></span>MANILA — University of Santo Tomas’ prized young wing Amiel Acido is ready to take a huge leap for the Growling Tigers starting UAAP Season 88.<br/><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2025/8/27/what-to-expect-in-the-uaap-season-88-opening-ceremony-1618"></a></div><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2025/8/27/what-to-expect-in-the-uaap-season-88-opening-ceremony-1618"><strong>READ: What to expect in the UAAP Season 88 opening ceremony</strong></a></div><p>The sweet-shooting 6-foot-4 forward from Antipolo — who was one of the most promising rookies for the España-based cagers in Season 87 — bared that while he already showed flashes of his prowess last year, he is more eager to live up to his potential starting the upcoming season.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/11/17/after-breakout-game-amiel-acido-eager-to-stay-consistent-for-ust-1447"><strong>READ: After breakout game in his ‘home court,’ Amiel Acido eager to stay consistent for UST</strong></a></div><p>“After ng rookie season ko, talagang nag set ako ng goals na dapat mas mag step-up pa ako sa second year ko,” Acido told ABS-CBN News.</p><p>Acido was among the most sought-after talents in his graduating high school batch in 2024.</p><p>He previously emerged as University of Perpetual Help’s main man in NCAA Season 99, helping the Junior Altas reach the Finals stage while also being named as that year’s Most Valuable Player of the grand old league.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/2024/3/20/perpetual-s-amiel-acido-named-ncaa-juniors-mvp-1424"><strong>READ: Perpetual’s Amiel Acido named NCAA Juniors’ MVP</strong></a></div><p>However, Acido acknowledged that he could have done more for UST as he entered the collegiate ranks, which is why he focused on being more comfortable for the Tigers by honing his talents further.</p><p>“Yung skills ko, kailangan kong i-improve pa,” shared Acido, who normed 3.5 points, 1.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists in over 10 minutes of action per game in Season 87.</p><div>To help him take the next step for UST, Acido leaned on seniors Nic Cabañero and Forthsky Padrigao, as well as former Tiger Christian Manaytay.<br/><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1756809246770IMG_1012-min.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="University of Santo Tomas’ wingman Amiel Acido during the Growling Tigers’ practice at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, September 1, 2025. Photo by Jose Raphael Gonzales, ABS-CBN News Intern."/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">University of Santo Tomas’ wingman Amiel Acido during the Growling Tigers’ practice at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion, September 1, 2025. <em>Photo by Jose Raphael Gonzales, ABS-CBN News Intern.</em></span></span></span>“Sobrang laking tulong nila,” he said. “Sila yung nag mulat sakin sa kung ano pa yung kaya kong gawin, para makapag step-up pa sa next level at mas makapag sabayan pa sa iba, sa mga mas magagaling kasi gusto ko talagang mas maging competitive.”</div><p>“Sinasabi na rin sa amin yan ng mga seniors namin yan kahit last year, kahit sila kuya Christian, kaya always ready ako at looking forward ako doon,” he added.</p><p>Aside from the on-court improvement that Acido looks to display come Season 88, in addition to what he vows to do is step into a leadership role as early as now.</p><div>“Tina-try ko na rin maging leader, na gawin rin kung ano yung mga ginagawa nila,” he said. “Ang gusto kong i-expect sa akin ng teammates ko, I’m always there to cheer them up at makatulong sa kumpyansa nila.
