<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1777954588749IMG_0886.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy.<em> Photo from SBP/Lemuel Medina Seijo.</em></span></span></span>MANILA — The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is eyeing a foreign mentor to serve as the next head coach of the Gilas Pilipinas women’s 5-on-5 team.</div><p>SBP executive director Erika Dy shared the development on Monday, saying they expect to officially conclude the search this month, with applicants coming from Europe, the United States, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.</p><p>“We already have a shortlist of six to seven names. It was more than 10, and there were really a lot of coaches who applied,” said Dy of the position previously held by Blackwater Bossing head coach Patrick Aquino.</p><p>“Nag-usap kami ni Coach Pat [Aquino[, and we felt that we need to bring Gilas to another level. It’s been a while since we’ve gone further than what we’ve achieved in Southeast Asia,” she added.</p><p>Gilas reached new heights under Aquino, with the Filipina cagers even ruling the women’s 5-on-5 event of the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in late 2025.</p><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/basketball/2026/3/28/pat-aquino-concludes-role-as-gilas-women-s-coach-sbp-in-search-of-new-mentor-1347">READ: Pat Aquino &#x27;concludes&#x27; role as Gilas Women&#x27;s coach; SBP in search of new mentor</a></div><p>But aside from seeking to further elevate the women’s program, Dy said neutrality was also a factor in bringing in a foreign coach.</p><p>“Nahihirapan tayo kapag galing dito yung coach kasi grupo-grupo, tapos naiintriga tayo sa selection ng players. So at least, maalis natin yun kapag foreign yung coach natin,” she said.</p><p>“Walang nag-apply, and wala rin kaming kinonsider [na local]. And Coach Pat has done very well for the program, so if we would go to a Filipino coach, it would still be him,” Dy added.</p><p>The new Gilas head coach is expected to lead the squad in the country’s hosting of the 2027 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup and spearhead the chase for a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.</p><p>Meanwhile, Dy said Aquino will remain with the SBP in a different capacity.</p><p>“The last time we spoke, he will still be staying with the federation to help the women’s grassroots program,” she shared. “He has a good eye for talent, so he will be assisting Coach Norman Black.”</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO</strong></div><div><strong><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GN2jQr28D4g?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span></strong><br/></div>
