Photos from UAAP Media/NBTC. </div>MANILA (UPDATED) — Ateneo de Manila University announced on Monday the deaths of two members of its men&#x27;s basketball team, Divine Adili and Rene Clert Baterbonia.The school said the incident occurred during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on the afternoon of June 8, 2026, resulting in the deaths of the two players.“The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time,” the school wrote.Adili, 21, competed for the Blue Eagles in UAAP Season 88, averaging 8.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 11 games.Baterbonia, 18, recently represented Davao in the 2026 Palarong Pambansa in Agusan del Sur and was set to suit up for Ateneo in UAAP Season 89 later this year.In a statement, the Police Regional Office 3 said that “initial findings indicate that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters.”The office also urged the public to refrain from sharing speculation surrounding the incident, saying authorities should be given time to complete their investigation.Meanwhile, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) also expressed grief over the deaths of Adili and Baterbonia.“As the National Sports Association for basketball, the SBP has been in communication with the University&#x27;s basketball officials to determine what assistance may be needed, with particular attention given to those most affected by this tragic incident,” the SBP <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1944517476216437&amp;set=a.1223220681679457">wrote in a statement</a>.“Rest in peace, Rene and Divine,” added the UAAP in a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/WearetheUAAP/posts/pfbid02jZvqitijYgzZBQmzCcdH6YaqaNkF3wfEuMRb2oJRwntEK2xYfimPN3wokvF2jgkKl">separate post. </a><div>— With a report from Darylle Sarmiento, ABS-CBN News</div>
