UAAP file photo</div>While Ateneo de Manila University is in the midst of investigations and hearings regarding the deaths of two of their players Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia during an ill-fated water-activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, the school has formally signed Louie Alas as interim head coach of the Blue Eagles Friday, July 10.Alas was previously an assistant on former head coach Tab Baldwin’s coaching staff.The 62-year-old coach won three NCAA titles with Colegio de San Juan de Letran, a Metropolitan Basketball Association championship with the Manila Metrostars in 1999, and an Asean Basketball League crown with Air Asia Philippines during the 2009-10 season. He also piloted the RP Youth Team to a Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) gold medal in 1999.“This is assuming that the team will play in the coming UAAP tournament,” Alas told this writer. “Nabakante kami ng higit isang buwan and we will slowly get everybody back in physical and mental shape.”It will be a difficult road for Ateneo as they have cancelled their training camps abroad and participation in local tournaments given the tragedy. According to Alas, because of the tragedy, the team’s participation in other tournaments and training camps abroad have been canceled. The team will work on their conditioning, get back to basics, and play tune up matches.“While everyone is looking forward to getting back to training which is also a form of therapy, we also have to consider their mental state,” added Alas.Former Blue Eagles star Nico Salva has also been appointed as interim team manager. Alas’ former player in Letran, RJ Jazul, will also join the coaching staff.“Matalinong player iyan and he will be a good coach one day,” noted Alas of his former ward who he won an NCAA title in 2005. Jazul parlayed his Letran career into a stint with Smart Gilas from 2008-11 along with teammate, Rey Guevarra.With many of the current assistants unsure of participation given the ongoing cases against them, Alas looks to tap another former player in Kerby Raymundo who he won a championship with in Letran in 1998.Raymundo was also an assistant to Aldin Ayo when the latter led Letran to the 2015 NCAA championship.“I need a big man coach,” Alas said of his former player who is named to the Philippine Basketball Association’s All-Time Greatest Players. “And Kerby has the credentials and know-how. All the current players including their Fil-American players will be undergoing physical exams within the next week as well as preparations for the upcoming academic school year 2026-27 this coming August.
