BANGKOK – Paris Olympian Joanie Delgaco and Kristine Paraon rowed to the gold in the women&#x27;s double sculls event on Tuesday at The Royal Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Center, Rayong. The Filipina duo took home the country&#x27;s first gold medal of the day, after clocking in 8 minutes and 16.976 seconds, five seconds ahead of the second placer. Delgaco and Paraon admitted they did not expect to win the gold, knowing they have tough competition in their event. &quot;Actually po kagabi, iniisip po namin, nakikita namin na baka pahirapan pa yung bronze eh. Sinabi ko sa sarili ko bago matulog kagabi, grabe talaga &#x27;pag si Lord na yung gumalaw, walang imposible talabga,&quot; Delgaco told Philippine Olympic Committee Media after the event.  &quot;Yung nangyari po sa ngayong race, hindi ko na po yunisip yung pag-okulang po sa mga training. Dinaan ko na lang po talaga sa tiwala sa sarili, tiwala sa partner and thankful din po ako dahil yung family ko po na sa finish line yun din po yung naging inspiration ko sa start palang,&quot; she explained. Paraon highlighted the importance of having an Olympian and her idol by her side. &quot;Sobrang ano po kasi isa rin po siya [Joanie] sa inspiration ko na isang rower, kaya naging isang rower rin po ako,&quot; she said. &quot;Hindi po namin ine-expect yung gold po kasi malalakas yung mga kalaban. Pero po tiwala po talaga sa isa&#x27;t-isa. At alam naman namin yung pinagdaanan namin sa training yung nakaraan po,&quot; Paraon added. Delgaco shared that she had doubts since she took a lengthy break from her sport, with the SEA Games only being her second competition in a while. &quot;Nag-worry din po ako sa sarili ko kasi mag-one year din ako nawala sa rowing dahil sa military training. And then after Paris [Olympics] medyo nagpahinga rin po ako kasi medyo mahabang training ,&quot; she said. Thailand took home the silver with a time of 8 minutes and 21.634 seconds, while Vietnam clinched bronze at 8 minutes and 26.447 seconds. Earlier, Tokyo Olympian Cris Nievarez clinched bronze at the men&#x27;s single sculls event, after clocking in a time of 08 minutes and 22.121 seconds.
