Handout/PFF-PMNFT/File</div>MANILA -- Albert Capellas, who led the Philippines to the semifinals of the 2024 ASEAN Championships, is stepping down from his post as coach of the men&#x27;s national football team.The development comes just over a week before the Philippines takes on Tajikistan in a crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifying match at the New Clark City Stadium on June 10.&quot;Personal reasons have led to Albert&#x27;s departure. Out of great respect for him, we will not elaborate,&quot; men&#x27;s team manager Freddy Gonzales said in a statement sent to the media late Saturday night.Capellas was in charge of the Philippine men&#x27;s national team for only eight months.In that stretch, he led the Philippines back to the semifinals of the ASEAN Championships, where they pulled off a stunning 2-1 win over Thailand in the home leg before losing away in Bangkok.In his last match in charge, Capellas steered the Philippines to a 4-1 rout of Maldives in an Asian Cup qualifying match last March.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2025/5/27/ph-names-squad-for-crucial-asian-cup-qualifier-vs-tajikistan-1659">READ: PH names squad for crucial Asian Cup qualifier vs. Tajikistan</a></div>&quot;My wonderful journey as head coach of the Philippines has come to an end, and I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have been part of it, especially the players and all the staff involved,&quot; said Capellas.&quot;Together, we have enjoyed an inspiring journey and have proven that Filipino football has a promising generation of young players with the potential to bring great pride and success to the country,&quot; he added.Capellas also expressed his gratitude to the Filipino football community and wished the team growth and success in the coming years.Stepping in as interim coach is Carles Cuadrat, who had just been recently appointed as an assistant.Cuadrat previously worked with the national teams of Saudi Arabia and El Salvador, and has experience with Barcelona Youth.&quot;We are grateful for [Capellas&#x27;] service, and wish him well. I continue to consider him a friend,&quot; Gonzalez said. &quot;As with all things in life, change happens and one must always be prepared to handle unexpected turns.&quot;&quot;We move on and keep pushing forward,&quot; he added. &quot;Albert left us with a blueprint to follow, and we thank him for bringing Carles on board, enabling him to be the interim head coach and provide continuity for what Albert has started.&quot;
