The Philippines U23 men&#x27;s national football team had a solid start in the U23 ASEAN Championship Mandiri Cup, blowing past Malaysia with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday at the Gelaro Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.Thanks to Otu Banatao Bisong&#x27;s brace at the 40th minute, the Philippines had an early 2-0 lead just before the halftime.But before that, Bisong already nailed a brilliant gal in the first half, with wingers Javier Mariona and Uriel Dalapo providing quality assists.The Filipinos&#x27; defense proved strong as the Malaysians tried to equalize the match early in the second half, to no avail.Goalkeeper Nic Guimaraes and the back four — Joshua Meriño, Noah Leddel, Ziggy Taningco, and Kamil Amirul — did their part by foiling the other side&#x27;s attacks.&quot;I would like to thank our assistant Coach Popoy and our goalkeeper Coach Juan, who held a training camp a week prior. Every little thing helps,&quot; said head coach Garrath McPherson.The triumph marked the biggest win of the country&#x27;s U23 squad over its counterpart in their head-to-head history.The Philippines is now sharing the Group A lead with Indonesia, which has won against Brunei with a whopping 8-0 shellacking.The young squad will battle host bet, which is also the reigning SEA Games Gold medalist and U23 Asian Cup semifinalist, scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m.
