(UPDATED) Filipina tennis star Alex Eala’s Miami Open run ended Monday night after bowing to world no. 14 Karolína Muchova of the Czech Republic, 0-6 2-6, in the tournament’s round of 16.Muchova, who was recent Qatar Open champion, delivered a dominant performance, showcasing her experience, precision, and tactical variety throughout the match.Eala acknowledged the level her opponent brought, saying post-match, “I think she played really well… and I definitely did not play my best, but of course, that’s also a big part because of how she played.”Eala elected to serve first but immediately faced pressure, getting broken in her opening service game after a double fault and a forehand error.Muchova quickly established control, breaking serve repeatedly and racing to a 4-0 lead. Mixing in serve-and-volley play with deep, powerful baseline shots, the 14th seed kept Eala off balance.Muchova’s ability to construct points—drawing Eala in before finishing at the net—proved especially effective.Eala struggled to find rhythm, committing unforced errors, and was unable to hold serve in the opening set as Muchova completed a dominant 6-0 sweep.The second set followed a similar pattern early on, with Muchova breaking Eala again to go up 3-0. Despite showing more fight—highlighted by extended games and multiple game points—Eala couldn’t convert key opportunities as Muchova remained composed under pressure.The Filipina finally got on the board at 4-1, drawing loud support from the Pinoy crowd, and even managed to hold serve again later in the set.However, Muchova’s consistency and “surgical” shot-making—clipping lines and varying angles—continued to dictate play, with Eala noting, “there are some details that I could have done better… maybe would have resulted in a more competitive match.”She comfortably held serve to close out the match, sealing a convincing 6-0, 6-2 victory.Muchova’s blend of power, precision, and tactical awareness proved too much, while Eala showed flashes of resilience but struggled to match the Czech’s level across the match.Despite the loss, Eala remained positive about her campaign, saying, “I’m still really happy about this week… of course leaving the court today a little disappointed, which is normal, but overall, very happy with my performance this week.”Eala earlier defeated Germany’s Laura Siegemund and Magda Linette of Poland before she faced Muchova.By reaching the Miami Open’s round of 16, Eala secured around $105,720 (or roughly P6.36 million) in prize money.Eala shared that she plans to take a couple of days off before resuming her training as she will start off her clay court swing and head to Austria next for the Upper Austria Ladies Linz set to begin on April 6.
