MANILA -- The Philippine women&#x27;s tennis is off to a winning start at the Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group II competition, knocking off top-seeded Hong Kong, China in a 2-1 upset.Tenny Madis gave the Philippines the early advantage, grinding through a three-hour, three-set battle against WTA world No. 948 Kallista Liu in singles, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2.Hong Kong quickly responded as Cheuk Ying Shek, ranked world No. 638, shut out Alexa Joy Milliam with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory in 50 minutes after lengthy rain delays. At 1-1 during the deciding doubles, Milliam teamed up with her former University of West Alabama partner Shaira Hope Rivera to take on the Hong Kong pair of Shek and Ching Laam Lai. The Filipino duo staved off three set points in the 12th game to force a first-set tiebreak, which they won, 7-6(3).After dropping serve to open the second set, Milliam and Rivera reeled off five consecutive games to seize control. Hong Kong&#x27;s Lai and Shek clawed back with three straight games of their own, but the Filipinas held on to secure the 7-6, 6-4 win and claim the tie.The Philippines entered the round-robin phase as the eighth seed among 10 nations in Group II. In Group A, they are joined by Pacific Oceania, Singapore, Hong Kong and Kyrgyzstan. Group B is composed of Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Laos, Sri Lanka and Chinese Taipei. The top two finishers from each pool will advance to promotion playoffs for a place in Asia-Oceania Group I in 2027, while the bottom two from each pool will contest relegation play-offs.
