Paige Javier, ABS-CBN News</div>MANILA – Padel Pilipinas president Jeff Cheng is looking to bring his experience to the national sports association that is pushing to further grow the sport in the country.Cheng was formally introduced as the new leader of Padel Pilipinas on Thursday, ahead of the 2026 Asia Pacific Padel Cup opening at Play Padel McKinley.Before taking on the new leadership role, Cheng was the manager of the Philippine Women&#x27;s National Football Team or Filipinas.As he starts a new chapter in padel, Cheng assured he will put in the same time and energy he did with the Filipinas in Padel Pilipinas.&quot;Yes. Definitely. I think the sport may be different now, but my commitment in helping the athletes, the Filipino athletes do their best. And our Philippine teams compete at their best level in international competition, the fire is still there. I think that&#x27;s basically what&#x27;s driving me in involving myself in Padel Pilipinas,&quot; Cheng said during the press conference.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/6/26/ph-looks-to-defend-home-court-in-asia-pacific-padel-cup-1752">READ: PH looks to defend home court in Asia Pacific Padel Cup </a></div>Cheng shared how he got involved with the national sports association and the padel community.&quot;I think actually it was in a way a coincidence when we were training for in Pinatar with the Filipinas football team so Senator Pia [Cayetano] was there and they were training the coaches. So that&#x27;s where how I got involved,&quot; he said.&quot;And they were looking for coaches in Spain so then after that, after my stint with the Philippine National Women&#x27;s Team, I got involved with Padel. And it&#x27;s a pretty new sport but an exciting sport and I think everybody will enjoy playing it,&quot; Cheng added.Padel Pilipinas executive director Atty. Jacqueline Gan-Cristobal underscored how Cheng has been supporting them and the sport even before he assumed his post.&quot;We just asked him if he could actually be now, officially our president, because he has given support and commitment to the padel community even before he was president,&quot; she said.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/3/10/padel-to-feature-at-asian-games-in-significant-moment-1241">READ: Padel to feature at Asian Games in &#x27;significant moment&#x27; </a></div>&quot;If you were wondering how we were able to pull off this kind of international tournament, it was him [Cheng] and our founder Senator Pia [Cayetano]&#x27;s brainchild. Because they wanted to showcase to the Asia-Pacific region that the Philippines can do it,&quot; Gan-Cristobal explained.For the new Padel Pilipinas president, the goal is to first raise awareness and interest about the sport and to build a community, especially in the grassroots.&quot;Being a young sport, the idea is to promote the sport and get more people to participate and I think it&#x27;s building the entire ecosystem of having first the right coaches. So that having the right coaches, we build the right foundation of the players,&quot; Cheng explained.&quot;We actually right now have programs of supporting padel clubs around the country and training the coaches as well. And of course we&#x27;re trying to promote private and government to build more courts so that more people can participate,&quot; he said.Last June 2024, the businessman and sports patron stepped away from his role as Filipinas team manager citing differences.Under Cheng&#x27;s stewardship, the Filipinas reached greater heights, including the country&#x27;s debut at the 2023 FIFA Women&#x27;s World Cup where they claimed a historic win over New Zealand.The Filipinas likewise won a bronze medal in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games and lifted their first ever trophy in 2022 in the AFF Women&#x27;s Championship.
