Henry Nicholls, AFP"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">Philippines&#x27; Alexandra Eala celebrates winning the first set against Poland&#x27;s Iga Swiatek during their women&#x27;s singles third round tennis match on the sixth day of the 2026 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, southwest London, on July 4, 2026. <em>Henry Nicholls, AFP</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed pride and optimism that Filipina tennis star Alex Eala might be the first Southeast Asian to bring home a Grand Slam, the Malacañang said on Thursday, after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s series of meetings with his counterpart in Singapore.</p><p>In tennis, the term Grand Slam refers to the accomplishment of winning all four major championships of Australia, France, Britain (Wimbledon), and the United States in the same calendar season, according to the US Open website.</p><p>“Binati rin ng Prime Minister ang Pilipinas at si Filipino tennis superstar Alex Eala sa pag-ukit ng kasaysayan sa Wimbledon,” Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a Palace briefing.</p><p>“Tiwala ang Prime Minister na si Alex Eala ang magiging kauna-unahang Southeast Asian na mag-uuwi ng grand slam title sa Wimbledon – bagay na sinang-ayunan ni Pangulong Marcos Jr,” she said.</p><p>“Kapwa nagpaabot ng paghanga ang dalawang lider sa tagumpay na dala ni Alex Eala sa Southeast Asia,” she added.</p><p>Before flying to Singapore earlier this week, Marcos <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/7/13/marcos-confers-presidential-citation-to-filipina-tennis-star-alex-eala-1942">conferred a presidential citation</a> to Eala in recognition of her historic run in Wimbledon, where she defeated defending champion Iga Swiatek.</p><p>Her victory allowed her to advance to the fourth round of the grass court Grand Slam, making her the first Filipina to go that far in a major. </p><p>Marcos is in Singapore for a 3-day working visit ahead of the Philippines’ turnover of the ASEAN chairmanship to the city state.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/sports/othersports/2026/7/12/alex-eala-returns-home-following-historic-wimbledon-run-1446">Alex Eala returns home following historic Wimbledon Run</a></div><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO:</strong></div><div style="text-align:center"><iframe width="960" height="540" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3K0dHlcomQE?si=xiyFu4fZzVTg2qM3" title="YouTube video player" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><br/></div>
