PHILTA photo</div>MANILA -- The Philippine Davis Cup team retained its spot in the Asia/Oceania Group III for next year after defeating Malaysia in a relegation playoff.Jed Olivarez dropped the opening singles match, losing to Darrshan Suresh Kumar, 6-7, 3-6.AJ Lim leveled the tie, defeating Imran Daniel Abdul Hazli, 6-1, 6-1.The deciding doubles rubber went the distance and then some. Rain suspended play with the Philippines leading 6-2, 3-2, pushing the match into a second day.When play resumed, Ruben Gonzales and Francis Casey &quot;Niño&quot; Alcantara closed out the win over Hao Sheng Koay and Darrshan, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Philippines the tie.&quot;It was an amazing week, super grueling, really tough conditions, a lot of ups and downs but overall I&#x27;m super proud of our team,&quot; Gonzales said.He credited his singles teammates for competing through difficult conditions. &quot;Really proud of Jed and AJ for giving it their all with the conditions being so tough,&quot; he said.&quot;It wasn&#x27;t the best results we wanted but I think there&#x27;s a lot of things we learned to improve for next year&#x27;s ties,&quot; he added.In doubles, Gonzales and Alcantara finished the tournament unbeaten.The Philippines will now turn their attention to preparation for next year&#x27;s campaign, with promotion to Group II as their target.
