Bacaro, Colonia deliver medals to open PH campaign in Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting tilt

MANILA – Filipina weightlifter Althea Bacaro gave the Philippines a strong start in the 2026 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships.The 15-year-old Bacaro won two gold medals in the women’s 45kg youth category on Friday evening, Philippine time.The Cebu City native initially ranked fourth in the snatch with a lift of 63kg, but ruled the clean and jerk with 83kg to win goldwith a total of 146kg.Bacaro’s golden finish came after she clinched silver and bronze medals at the IWF Youth World Championships last May in Cali, Colombia.Coach Christopher Bureros was pleased with Bacaro’s latest achievement on the international stage.“As a coach, proud at happy ako sa panalo ni Althea dahil nagbunga rin ang lahat ng pagod at mga sakripisyo namin sa training. Proud ako sa kanya kasi for all the international competitions na sinalihan niya this is the first time na nakuha niya ang overall championships,” Bureros told ABS-CBN News in a message.Jay-R Colonia of Zamboanga City delivered another set of medals for the Philippines in the men’s 55kg youth category.Colonia captured two silver medals after lifting 135kg in the clean and jerk and 243kg in total.The Zamboanga City native also clinched bronze in the snatch with a lift of 108kg.The Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships will run until August 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
