UAAP Media."/>De La Salle University’s Shevana Laput in UAAP Season 88. UAAP Media.MANILA — The first round of the UAAP Season 88 volleyball tournaments is in the books, and De La Salle University found its spark through two standout performers.</div>Team captain Shevana Laput powered the unbeaten Lady Spikers, while Eugene Gloria steadied the Green Spikers as the Taft-based squads closed the opening round on contrasting yet promising notes.The Lady Spikers completed a flawless 7–0 sweep in the women’s tournament, while the Green Spikers recovered from a slow start to finish at 3–4.For their efforts, Laput and Gloria were named Collegiate Press Corps (CPC) Players of the Week, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, for the period covering March 11 to 15.Laput led the charge for La Salle with two commanding performances to seal the Lady Spikers’ first-round sweep, a first since their title run in UAAP Season 85.The team captain erupted for a career-high 26 points, built on 19 attacks, six blocks, and an ace, along with four digs in a thrilling five-set win over Adamson University.She then followed it up with 19 points on 15 attacks, three blocks, one ace, and eight digs in a four-set triumph over defending champion National University.“Like Angel [Canino] said, we’re happy,” Laput said. “The beautiful thing about today&#x27;s game is that we were able to show that we can work hard. We will work hard to get what we want. Life is unfair, but life will give you what you deserve. We have to work hard and earn every single win, every single point at that.”Despite the perfect start, Laput stressed that the Lady Spikers are far from satisfied.“We’re happy, but tomorrow we’ll wake up and figure out what we need to improve going into Round 2,” she said. “This is a long journey. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”Laput edged teammate Angel Canino, University of Santo Tomas’ Angge Poyos and Reg Jurado, Ateneo de Manila University’s Ana Hermosura, and Adamson’s Frances Mordi and Shaina Nitura for the weekly citation, which is also backed by Discovery Suites and Buffalo Wings N’ Things.The Lady Spikers’ captain also highlighted the significance of their statement win over National University (NU).“Ever since we were rookies up until now as seniors, this means a lot to us,” Laput said. “Coming into the game, we felt this is our time, this is our season.”In the men’s division, Gloria delivered steady all-around performances to help the Green Spikers turn things around after an 0–4 start.<div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1773719063756UAAP 88 MVB NU vs. DLSU- Eugene Gloria-9603.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960" alt="De La Salle University’s Eugene Gloria in UAAP Season 88. He then chipped in 14 points, four digs, and 12 receptions in La Salle’s morale-boosting win over five-time defending champions NU to end the first round.</div>“For me, maybe this is a wake-up call for everyone,” Gloria said. “We need to work on the remaining games so we won’t have a hard time in the second round.”Gloria also credited his teammates and their work in training for the team’s improved play.“I can’t say I’m always consistent, but I’ll do everything I can,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without my teammates. It all starts in practice.”Beating the defending champions proved to be a major confidence boost for the rebuilding Green Spikers.“We know NU is the champion team, so everyone’s morale was boosted,” Gloria said. “We didn’t expect to win since we lost a lot of seniors, and most of our lineup now are newbies to the UAAP. You could also say it’s a rebuilding team, so everyone just worked hard, and maybe the pride also as a Lasallian.”Gloria edged teammate Issa Ousseini and Chris Hernandez, UST star Josh Ybañez, and Far Eastern University standouts Amet Bituin, Mikko Espartero, and Dryx Saavedra for the weekly honor decided by scribes who cover the beat.
