<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1776155390250IMG_4505.jpeg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio (middle) with NCAA Season 101 management committee. <em>Rom Anzures, ABS-CBN News.</em></span></span></span>MANILA — The NCAA is set to hold its first-ever golf tournament next month to support the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)’s mission of further developing grassroots sports in the country.</div><p>Set for May 20 at the Wack Wack Golf &amp; Country Club in Mandaluyong, the grand old league will stage what it considers a “special” event, featuring eight member institutions and one guest school.</p><p>“This happened because of the initiative of our PSC chairman [Patrick Gregorio],” said Atty. Jonas L. Cabochan, tournament host San Beda University’s representative to the NCAA Management Committee, during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum.</p><p>San Beda, alongside Arellano University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, College of Saint Benilde, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Mapua University, Lyceum of the Philippines University, and University of Perpetual Help, are confirmed participants in the tournament.</p><p>Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College have yet to finalize their entries, while University of Asia and The Pacific will participate as guest school of the tournament which is also staged in partnership with Pilipinas College Golf Series.</p><p>According to NCAA Management Committee chairman and Mapua representative Melchor Divina, a “special” event in the league is tested for three seasons before a decision is made on whether it will become a regular sport.</p><p>“If it becomes a regular sport, it can already be considered for student-athlete status, and scholarships may be allotted,” he said.</p><p>In the Season 101 edition, current students — including those at the graduate school level — as well as alumni, are allowed to compete. The tournament will feature both individual and team play, with the league expecting around 100 participants.</p><p>National players are likewise welcome to compete, provided they are students of member schools. However, those already in the professional ranks are not eligible.</p><p>Aside from golf, the NCAA will also stage demonstration sports in boxing (May 12–14) and weightlifting (June). Also ongoing from April 6 to 30 is aerobic gymnastics, which the league is holding in partnership with the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) and the PSC.</p><p>According to PSC chief Patrick Gregorio, their partnership with the NCAA is part of a broader program to link up with educational institutions nationwide, utilizing them to strengthen the country’s grassroots sports development across various disciplines.</p><p>“Ang isang program po ng PSC is to reach out sa mga State Universities and Colleges,” he shared. “It is just right that the PSC coordinates and ties up with them so we can develop other sports in their areas.”</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>RELATED VIDEO:</strong><br/><br/><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EWxZTeYNRmI?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></span></div>
