Sandra Bullock stars in 'Bird Box,' a film that has inspired a social media challenge where people try to do things while wearing blindfolds. Netflix

It was not too long ago when Netflix joyously announced that more than 45 million of its subscribers have watched "Bird Box" in its first week of release --a record number for a Netflix original movie.

But because some of those subscribers have decided to take on the Internet challenge of doing tasks while blindfolded --similar to how Sandra Bullock's character did things in the film-- the streaming website has been forced to issue a public health warning.

"Canโ€™t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE," a post that was put up on the US Netflix Twitter account read.

"Bird Box" tells the story of a mother and her two kids forced to wear blindfolds as they try and survive a world overrun by unseen threats that can drive people to commit suicide just by looking at them.

Its popularity has inspired people to take on a social media challenge and attempt to do every thing while wearing blindfolds.

This has led to some worrying videos that shows people stumbling around their houses and a toddler crashing into a wall, and others filming themselves walking blind out on the streets.

"Bird Box" was released over the holiday break and Netflix claimed a record number of its subscribers have watched it within its first week.

It has received mixed reviews, with some drawing unfavorable comparisons to the 2018 hit thriller "A Quiet Place."
