The tandem of Karina Bautista and Aljon Mendoza is one of the best love teams to stan because of their positive influence on the youth, especially in living independently and managing their future. In this episode of Kapamilya Chat, KarJon shared their financial wisdom gleaned at a very young age.

Before joining showbiz, Karina used to juggle pageantry and schooling. It was a test of time management skills and endurance but a big help in earning extra. She’s also no stranger to budgeting, tasked to handle the monthly allowance provided by her OFW mom. If you've been a fan since Pinoy Big Brother days, you already know how independent Karina is. She lives on her own, thus paying for her own expenses.

Although her showbiz earnings may be more than what she used to handle, Karina was able to take care of her hard-earned money. So I think I’m doing good.”

Aljon, on other hand, lives with the family in Pampanga. Although he’s no breadwinner, he and siblings chip in for the household bills.

One challenge for youngsters like them is the temptation to splurge, especially on new trends. Yet Karina remains a budget expert that she’s able to differentiate priorities from mere financial distractions. She also takes advantage of freebies and doesn’t waste things.

“Sobrang tipid kong tao.

She added, “Very clear sa akin kung ano ‘yung needs ko talaga. I have survival instincts kasi I live independently, so may mga ganu’n ako.”

It doesn’t mean she deprives herself of her wants. But the technique is to prioritize the needs over rewards, which entails a lot of self-control. “’Yung wants, later ko na siya binibili. Wine-weigh in ko.

Like the uber-‘tipid’ Karina, Aljon is sometimes taunted as ‘kuripot’ and has mastered the art of delaying gratification. He also considers an item’s investment value before splurging, “Kapag feeling ko magagamit ko nang pangmatagalan, bibilhin ko siya.”

Young adults nowadays often confuse rewards with luxury, which, according to Karina, can be solved by a strong sense of self-awareness.

So, how can one draw the line between needs and wants? Karina shared this quote, “Your needs actually depend on what you want.” Meaning, if you want to just survive, your needs would be basic necessities like food, water, and home. However, if you want to actually be healthy, you would need more nutritious food, which may be more expensive but can be considered an investment for your health.

Aljon, on the other hand, has this habit of occasionally enjoying the fruit of his hard work as either alone time or get-together with friends and family. He loves to give his nephews and nieces gifts, too, because it makes him happy without the financial guilt. “Deserve mo maging masaya as long as maging wise ka sa pagba-budget.
