Flowers and tributes were removed from the scene of the deadliest mass killing in China in a decade, as the government scrambled to respond and censor online outrage on Wednesday (November 13).

On Monday (November 11), a male driver angry at his divorce settlement, according to police, rammed his car into a crowd at a sports center in the city of 2.5 million, killing 35 people and injuring another 43. The government took almost a day to announce the death toll.

Mr. He, a local flower shop manager, said he attempted to deliver nine wreaths made from 4,500 chrysanthemums but was directed to a funeral home, which also refused to accept the flowers.

The attack occurred as Zhuhai was hosting China's largest aviation exhibition, a biennial event showcasing the nation’s civil and military aerospace advancements, including a new stealth jet fighter unveiled this year.
