MANILA -- After three years in Hong Kong Disneyland, where he was fortunate enough to be part of the new Castle of Magical Dreams, David Ezra is back in Manila as the villainous dentist Orin in The Sandbox's Collective's upcoming production of "Little Shop of Horrors," opening on July 6.

This could have been his second local musical this year if he made it to the recent staging of "Rent" in Manila, but he was still tied up with Disneyland at the time.

"They asked me to send audition videos while I was still in Hong Kong. I guess I just wasn’t right for the part I auditioned for. And if ever they would’ve included me in the cast, I won’t be able to make it in time for rehearsals," he said.

For his role as Orin, he said he had to study different actors, comedians, and even psychopaths.

"The thing with this role is -- you have the freedom to explore different kinds of comedic approaches and mix in different pegs. So it’s [really] fun while creating it," he said.

It was the role that convinced him to do this production. "It’s going to be my first time to do a villainous comedic role. A super character role," he said.

After his three-year stint in Hong Kong, yes, Ezra is staying for good.

"Musical theater is what I missed most here in Manila. So yeah as long as there are roles for me that I think I can give justice to, I will be doing them," he said.

He has some theater projects in the pipeline, but he can’t say just yet. He'll have a lot of events in the coming months, too.

Apart from "Rent," he dreams of doing "Phantom of the Opera" in the West End or on Broadway, as it's his ultimate dream.

Prior to leaving for Hong Kong in 2020, Ezra did "Ang Huling El Bimbo," alternating with Gian Magdangal as the older Hector for the show's 2019 run. He was supposed to do "Rama Hari," which was set to open on March 20, 2020, and was already rehearsing, when the lockdown was announced on March 12 due to the pandemic.
