Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2015, told herself she wouldn't cry. But she did. It has been a long journey since she won the crown 2 years ago — the Philippines' first in more than 4 decades — and she has a handful of people she would love to thank for making it one that's leaning towards enjoyable rather than arduous.

She continued: "And it's true, and it's not just because it's her job. It's because she also cares about the welfare of the girls. She's taught me a lot of life lessons, you know? Because I've made some mistakes and hindi nila ako pinabayaan.

"It's so easy to watch a queen fall. That's what people want to see eh. Like alright, you made it, you won the crown. But isn't it more interesting especially for the media to see a girl lose her way? But to them it's not like that. They really empower the girls and she wants to make sure — sinabi niya sa akin 'to na, 'You know, my greatest fear is for you to leave us not as a whole, broken.' And I'm glad that they care."

Wurtzbach made a guest appearance on the late night talk show ahead of the coronation night of the 65th Miss Universe competition set to be held on January 30. She talked about her plans to go back to New York once she passes down her title, and looked back at her winning answer from last year — the one she punctuated with what's quickly becoming an empowerment motto: "I'm confidently beautiful with a heart."

But the interview took an emotional turn when she was read a comment by Miss Universe Organization head Paula Shugart, in which the official acknowledge that she will miss Wurtzbach and that she will cry once her reign is over. Shugart also described Wurtzbach as a "hard act to follow."

"That's the best compliment for me because that's exactly what I wanted to do during my reign," said Wurtzbach. "I didn't want to copy any former Miss Universe title-holders, I just wanted to be myself. And I wanted to be remembered as a different kind of a beauty queen."

"I'm going to miss them too and I'm so happy and so grateful — I'm just really thankful that they took care of me and I'm going to keep making them proud, make the organization proud because I feel like that's the best gift that I can give back to them."

"You don't know how life was difficult for me back in the Philippines. I'm just so thankful and grateful that you made this all happen," she said, addressing Shugart, Swan, and the rest of her team.

She also said that hearing positive comments from Shugart and other members of the Miss Universe Organization has made her forget all the criticisms she received throughout her reign, among them allegedly not pursuing her advocacy of promoting HIV/AIDS awareness and openly talking about her personal life.

"When I hear these things, lahat nung mga bashings, lahat nung mga sinasabi ng mga tao na you should have done more of this, less of that. You should have worked more on (promoting) HIV (awareness), you should have kept mum about your personal life. You should have acted more queenly. Like all of that, I forget about all of it because they're happy, and that's what makes me happy," she said.
