MANILA (UPDATE) — Labor leader and presidential candidate Leody de Guzman voted Monday in Cainta, Rizal for the 2022 elections.

"Hindi naman tayo boboto dahil sa t-shirt, dahil sa pera, dahil sa pinakain. Alam ko sa kaibuturan ng ating puso, bumoboto tayo dahil gusto natin ng pagbabago," De Guzman said in an interview before going to the polling precinct.

(People will not vote based on giveaway shirts, money, food. I know deep in their hearts, we vote because we crave for change.)

He said he recognizes the possibility of losing due to the extent of traditional politics in the country but says they will launch their own movement.

"Prepared ako both manalo, matalo. Pero sa'kin, hindi naman kasi ako politiko eh. Ako nama'y kilala niyo, ay street parliamentarian sa mahabang panahon. At kahit walang eleksyon, tuloy-tuloy na nakikipaglaban para roon sa mga isyu na aking binitbit, na laban ng mga sektor."

(I'm prepared to win or lose. But for me, I'm not a politician. I'm known as a street parliamentarian for the longest time. Even without elections, we continue to fight for the issues we carried, the issues of various sectors.)

De Guzman arrived at Cainta Elementary School around 8 a.m. accompanied by members of his party, Partido Lakas ng Masa, and family.

The labor leader earlier said he is expecting the vote of workers to deliver and give him the win. He noted that his campaign bid was "good enough" despite the lack of resources.

He noted anew how his candidacy has changed the landscape of elections in the Philippines.

"Marami ang nagsasabi na dahil sa paglahok ko, kasi first time 'to eh, na manggagawa, lider ng masa, lider ng sektor na tumakbo sa pagka-presidente, napakalayo ng inabot. Sinabi nila na nagbago 'yung landscape ng eleksyon ngayong taon," he said.

(Many say that my presidential bid has reached new milestones because it's the first time a laborer, a leader of the masses, a leader of a sector ran for president. They said that it has changed the landscape of the elections this year.)

"'Yung discourse ay nagbago. Hindi na lang puro sayaw, kanta. Na-obliga ang maraming kalaban ko na magsalita sa isyu ng masang Pilipino."

(The discourse changed. It was not just about dancing and singing. My rivals were obliged to speak about issues faced by the Filipino masses.)

De Guzman's running mate Walden Bello voted at E. Rodriguez High School before noon.

De Guzman lost in the 2019 midterm senatorial elections, placing 38th overall with 888,458 votes. He promised then to end job contractualization, among others.

He is the chairperson of labor group Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino and founding member of party-list Partido Manggagawa.

A longtime labor rights activist, he is the country representative of the International Council of the International Center for Labor Solidarity.

De Guzman's party is endorsing senatorial bets Atty. Luke Espiritu, Roy Cabonegro, and David D'Angelo together with Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso's bet Samira Gutoc.
