Palace: Presidency isn’t ‘cowed, weakened’ by UN rights body’s resolution

Malacañang on Thursday said the resolution approved by the United Nations Human Rights Council calling for a thorough international review of the war on illegal drugs in the Philippines contained "false information and unverified facts and figures."

"We question the propriety of the resolution as well as its validity," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement, adding that it doesn't perturb the administration.

"The Duterte presidency is not cowed or weakened by such resolution," Panelo said.

The resolution had faced strong pushback from the government, which counters that the toll has been exaggerated -- its estimates say 5,300 have died, not 20,000 as claimed by watchdogs -- and that the crackdown enjoys widespread popular support.

Panelo said the resolution was "designed to embarrass" the Philippines on the global stage.

"The resolution demonstrates how the Western powers are scornful of our sovereign exercise of protecting our people from the scourge of prohibited drugs that threaten to destroy the fabric of our society," he said.

"Their intrusive abuse is patent and condemnable."
