MANILA—The House of Representatives unanimously approved on third and final reading this week a bill banning tall trees and other hazardous obstructions near power lines.

House Bill 6276 provides that "tall growing plants" should not interfere with the "right-of-way" of power lines to ensure the uninterrupted transmission of electricity.

Construction of hazardous structures is also prohibited in areas near power lines and related facilities.

The bill, authored by 1-CARE Party-list Rep. Carlos Roman Uybarreta, declares it unlawful to plant tall growing plants in areas near power lines.

The bill also declares it unlawful to prevent necessary cutting or trimming of tall growing plants, as well as the removal or demolition of hazardous structures.

Fines ranging from P20,000 to P100,000 and prison time ranging from one to 30 days, or as long as 6 years can be slapped on those found guilty of violating the terms of the proposed law.
