MANILA—Sen. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go on Friday said only “Superman” can solve Metro Manila traffic, as he conceded the Duterte administration could no longer help ease commuter burden.

Go added that he does not agree there is a transportation crisis in Metro Manila, saying the traffic problem has existed for a while.

“Matagal na iyan. Hindi natin masasabi na crisis, it’s been there, napakatagal na ang traffic sa Metro Manila,” Go told reporters in Manila.

“Ang makaka-solve ng traffic sa Metro Manila, alam mo kung sino? Superman.”

Go said Duterte no longer promised to solve Metro Manila traffic because he knew this could not be achieved.

“Si Pangulo hindi nangangako iyan ng hindi niya kayang gawin. Hindi natin ma-solve ito, kaya sinabi ko kanina umuwi na lang tayo sa probinsya. Maluwang pa doon, gumawa na lang tayo ng bagong siyudad,” the senator said.

Go said granting Duterte emergency powers to solve traffic could no longer be an option, since the chief executive will step down in less than three years.

A 2017 study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency said the Philippines loses P3.5 billion a day due to traffic and congestion in Metro Manila.
