MANILA — Tropical cyclone Leon intensified into a typhoon over the waters east of Cagayan, state weather agency PAGASA said before noon on Tuesday.

PAGASA said Leon is now blowing winds of 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 160 km/h. It is moving west-northwestward at 10 km/h.

The weather bureau meanwhile raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, eastern Cagayan, and northeastern Isabela.

Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect in 20 provinces, mostly in Northern Luzon. Wind signals in Samar Island have now been lifted.

PAGASA said Wind Signal Nos. 3 or 4 could be raised over Batanes and Babuyan Islands while hoisting of Signal No. 5 is not ruled out.

At 10 a.m. Tuesday, Typhoon Leon was located 555 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

The outer rainbands of Leon will bring heavy to torrential rains in Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, and Apayao while Ilocos Sur, Abra, and Kalinga may have moderate to heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Leon's trough or extension will also bring up to heavy rains in MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, and Negros Island.

Flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected.

FORECAST TRACK

The typhoon will continuously track northwestward and may intensify up to near-super typhoon strength. Further intensification to super typhoon however is not ruled out.

It will be closest to Batanes on Thursday and a landfall in the province is also likely.

Leon will make landfall over southeastern Taiwan on Thursday afternoon or evening. It may exit the Philippine area of responsibility late Thursday or early Friday.

The public is advised to continue monitoring as the forecast will still change.
