TARLAC — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said Friday it would hire more Filipinos who are skilled in cybersecurity as it intends to bolster its digital defenses.

AFP Chief Romeo Brawner Jr said this follows the order from Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr for the Armed Forces to beef up its cyber capacities to help maintain the country’s security in the face of “rapid technological advancements”.

Brawner said AFP would expand its “cyber warrior group”.

“We are going to hire Filipinos who are really skilled in cyber pero hindi naman kinakailangan na talagang magaling na magaling na sila kasi we will train them also in cyber defense, both in passive and active defense,” Brawner said in an interview with media during the Philippine Army’s 127th Anniversary in Capas, Tarlac.

(We are going to hire Filipinos who are really skilled in cyber but not necessarily experts because we will also train them in cyber defense, both in passive and active defense.)

“Alam naman po natin na kapag sinabi natin na cyber, hindi naman kailangan ng mga malalaking equipment or kagamitan like ships and airplanes. We can fight in the cyber domain even with just a laptop or even celphone kayang kaya natin lumaban,” he said.

(We all know that if we say cyber, it doesn't mean big equipment or materials like ships and airplanes. We can fight in the cyber domain even with just a laptop or even cellphone.)

For the Philippine Army, Commanding General LtGen. Roy Galido said they would train their soldiers in cyber defense through partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

“We are working with TESDA to provide the national certifications on skills na karapat dapat sa isang sundalo (that a soldier should have),” LtGen. Galido said.

“Ang basic skills and dito natin nakikita kung iyong tao ay may aptitude for the cyber skills na kailangan natin para sa depensa,” he added.

(The basic skills, and we will see here if the person has the aptitude for cyber skills we need in defense.)
