MANILA — More than 3 million learners from 14 regions have been affected by suspension of in-person classes by schools in areas that are experiencing extreme heat on Friday.

A report from the Department of Education (DepEd) shows 5,288 schools have declared shift to alternative delivery modes such as online classes and modular learning, affecting 3,648,472 students.

DepEd earlier reminded schools and local government units that they have authority to declare suspension of classes if current weather conditions are conducive to classroom learning.

“Given that DepEd supervises more than 47,000 schools nationwide, it is in the best interest of the learning community to have localized assessments for timely response and interventions to ensure the welfare of learners and personnel,” DepEd said in its statement Tuesday.
