MANILA -- Some families displaced by Marawi siege are appealing to the government to speed up the distribution of compensation, seven years after the war.

"Ang appeal lang namin is to fast track the compensation, para hindi na ma-prolong ang agony ng constituents namin. Kasi hindi pa sila nakakabalik until now. Nasa temporary shelters pa rin sila. ‘Yung iba naman hirap talaga sa buhay, so kailangan talaga nila itong compensation. Kasi more than one year na ang inantay ng victims," Chairman of Barangay Datu sa Dansalan Dayanarra Rasuman said during a public consultation conducted by the House Ad Hoc Committee on Marawi Rehabilitation and Victims Compensation on Tuesday.

Committee Chairperson and Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong said the issue on valuation standards may need to be addressed by amending the law. He gave assurances that the appropriate House and Senate committees are already looking into the matter.

"We will revisit the law and we will possibly file for an amendatory bill in order that we can adjust the valuation standard now being utilized by the MCB (the Marawi Compensation Board) kasi tied ang kamay nila. But rest assured we will do that," Adiong said.

As of last month, the Philippine Government has distributed nearly P149 million in compensation for victims of the Marawi siege. The MCB said the amount represents 32 structural property claims and 86 death claims that the board has already paid to victims.

It hopes to compensate around 2,000 claimants this year, adding that MCB has initiated efforts to expedite the process of claiming financial compensation.

As of May 2024, there were 14,000 claimants that formally requested for compensation from the Philippine government ahead of the July 3, 2024 deadline. These are currently being studied.
