KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has rejected the "conditions" set by allies of former President Rodrigo Duterte for mending ties with the latter's family.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Tuesday, Marcos said that true reconciliation should not be made conditional.

“No, no, no. That's not how reconciliation works. You don't put conditions to reconcile,” Marcos said.

Duterte allies earlier said that Marcos should first bring Duterte back to the Philippines to prove that he is serious with political reconciliation.

Marcos, however, expressed willingness to sit down and talk with the Duterte camp to be able to mend broken ties.

“When you want – if you're sincere, you want to reconcile, let's sit in front of… Ano ba talaga ang problema? Paano nangyari ito? Tanggalin natin ang problema,” the President said.

“Pero ‘yung sasabihin mo, hindi ako makikipag-usap hanggang ibigay mo sa akin ito, ito, ito, ito, eh walang pupuntahan ‘yan. Tapos na, tapos na. That's not reconciliation... Wala nang pupuntahan ‘yun. Tapos na ang usapan," he said.

The Duterte patriarch was arrested in the Philippines and brought to The Hague, the Netherlands in March to face the International Criminal Court, where a case of crimes against humanity was lodged against him over his drug war.
