MANILA — Prosecutor General Richard Anthony Fadullon said Tuesday the government is open to talks with the families of the missing "sabungeros" or cockfight enthusiasts who have already withdrawn from the cases, if and when they decided to cooperate again with the Department of Justice.

The families had withdrawn as complainants in the civil cases but the government is still pursuing the criminal cases of kidnapping and serious illegal detention against accused security personnel and policemen in Manila and San Pablo, Laguna.

“Meron po kaming naririnig o ugong na balitang ganon pero sa tanggapan namin wala pa namang lumalapit,” Fadullon said.

“Walang makakapigil sa kanila na lapitan kami, kami naman po ay pauunlakan  namin na humarap sa kanila pero ayoko pong pangunahan kung anuman ang babanggitin nila sa amin, mas maiging magkausap muna kami bago kami magbigay ng anumang pahayag,” Fadullon added.

Fadullon also maintained the position of the government that the Manila Regional Trial Court should issue arrest warrants against the accused who were released on bail following the decision of the Court of Appeals.

“The position of the department is that notwithstanding the remedy availed of by the accused, elevating the matter to the Supreme Court, the decision that stands, as it is right now, the bail should not have been granted, therefore all the accused should be arrested,” Fadullon also said.

In the Laguna case, Fadullon said the government will file a motion for reconsideration for the reversal of the court’s decision to grant bail to the accused. “The department will surely file a motion for reconsideration and consider other options after that,” Fadullon said

As to whistleblower Julie Patidongan who said the missing sabungeros were buried in Taal Lake, Fadullon said his narrations are still undergoing evaluation.

“He is still an accused in the case, although he may be considered a whistleblower, as of this time, all the things that have been disclosed are still being subjected to validation and evaluation by enforcement authorities,” Fadullon said.

Fadullon also noted that the Philippine National Police is on top of the case build-up, in connection with the statements of Patidongan or Alias Totoy linking businessman Charlie “Atong” Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto to the cases.

“What I know as of this time is that they are continually building up the case, trying to validate also information that is being provided, that was provided by Alias Totoy,” Fadullon said.
