PALAWAN - Vice President Leni Robredo on Friday visited Agutaya, a 5th-class island municipality in northern Palawan.

The island municipality is home to one of Palawan's native tongues, Agutaynen. She visited the island barangay of Diit.

According to Councilor Cheryl Apolinario, the visit came after Mayor Perla Bacuel met with the vice president and submitted a paper to show that Agutaya remains one of the poorest municipalities in the Philippines.

Tambalang or seaweed farming is one of Agutaya's main source of livelihood, especially in the island communities. But the current buying rate, according to Apolinario, is at an all-time low.

The main mode of transportation to get to Agutaya is through sea travel from Cuyo, another island municipality. This is especially difficult during the northeast monsoon season and rainy season.

The local government Unit of Agutaya said it hopes that Robredo will follow through with her promise to place Agutaya in the vice president's list of 50 priority municipalities.

They said that Agutaya can become a tourist destination with its many undiscovered gems, including white sand beaches and picturesque sunsets.
