President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Wednesday vowed to continue to support initiatives that would guarantee peace and empowerment of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

He made the statement as he recognized the 10th year since the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).

CAB was signed on March 27, 2014, after 17 years of negotiations between the Philippine government (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

It consolidates and affirms the understanding between the two parties as they aim to "end armed conflicts between the GPH and the MILF, and promote peace and stability in this part of the world".

"A decade ago, the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) led up our hopes for peace," Marcos said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

"Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and respect for diverse cultures, there were certainly many challenges, but we persevered," he added.

"Today, as your president, I stand before you, committed to fulfilling that promise," he also stressed.

Marcos noted that the administration is enacting "vital legislation" to ensure fair elections in 2025 and for the Bangsamoro to "chart their own prosperous future".

"This is our legacy, let us build it together," he said.

The region was supposed to hold its first elections in 2022 but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed aspects of its agreement with government, including the decommissioning of former rebels.
