MANILA - The Department of Education on Saturday condemned the brutal killing of a 14-year-old while she was answering her learning modules at home in Talisay City.

"DepEd extends its deepest condolences to its bereaved family, friends, and classmates during this time of grief. No learner should ever fear for their safety while pursuing education, whether at home or in school," DepEd said in a statement.

The agency also urged authorities to investigate the  crime.

"The Department is deeply concerned and alarmed with the recent incidents of brutal killings of minors, especially girls. We urge the local authorities and the community to come together in solidarity against violence and to ensure the safety of all learners," the agency said.

According to authorities, the teenager's sister said masked men entered their home, ransacked it, and shot the victim multiple times.

Meanwhile, the Talisay City Police Station said it already acquired the testimonies of neighbors and the victim's sibling.

“Hindi pa kasi ma-consider na suspect, mga person of interest kasi ongoing pa ang hot pursuit,” Police LtCol. Epream Paguyod told ABS-CBN News in a phone interview.

(We cannot consider them as suspects because hot pursuit operation is still ongoing.)

He also refused to divulge about the number of men involved in the crime including their description and background, adding it is a "sensitive case."

The perpetrator remains at large, while they could not reveal the motive for the crime at the moment.
