MANILA — Basti Valencia delivered when it mattered the most for Arellano University.

The 6-foot-3 wingman converted the dagger for the Chiefs in their 81-77 victory over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday, and this helped the Chico Manabat-mentored squad to improve to 6-9 and keep their Final Four aspirations alive.

"Tagal ko nang inaantay yung ganito eh," said the 22-year-old, San Pedro, Laguna native, who tied his career-best of 25 points on top of five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block against the Heavy Bombers.

Only ahead by two in the dying seconds, Valencia drained a mid-range pull-up jumper to extend their lead to two possessions, and he said that this was a matter of living up to the challenge of Manabat towards his players.

"Sa amin kasi, ini-instill sa amin ni coach na hangga’t kaya at kahit anong mangyari, dapat laban pa rin," he pointed out.

"So iniisip ko lang yung will to win, yung talagang kailangan namin yung panalo, and dapat kami yung mas may gusto makuha yung panalo," Valencia added.

But aside from the need to rack up more wins with only three assignments left for the Chiefs, Valencia said that his performance today was his way of repaying the trust that Manabat has in him being one of their go-to-guys.

"Si Coach Chico kasi, grabe mag bigay ng kumpyansa," said Valencia, who has been averaging 10.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.2 steals for the hoopers from Legarda Street.

"So it's either yun yung mag bo-boost sayo, or kakainin ka nung mga binibigay niya pag 'di ka nag deliver. Mahirap kasi 'pag binibigyan ka ng opportunity, tapos pag andoon ka na, mawawala ka," he explained.

With only three games left for Arellano, Valencia is focused on remaining consistent to help tow his team to the Final Four, and he knows what he needs to do to be able to fulfill this for their team.

"Kailangan maging mas matured ako," he said. "Kailangan ko mabasa yung coverage sa akin ng maayos."

"Nung mga past games na walang napipiga mula sa akin, masyado akong nagpipilit ng tira eh, so kailangan ko ma-read ng maayos yung coverage ng opponents sa akin," Valencia emphasized.
