Lea Salonga set the Twitter world abuzz recently with her tweet about the celebration of Independence Day in the country. 'Our country is not yet debt-free, poverty-free, crime-free, or corruption-free. So what are we free from exactly and why do we celebrate it?' she posted on her official Twitter account @msleasalonga last June 11, 2015.
Twitter user @tismejason replied to Lea's tweet asking the Broadway star if there's any country in the world that is free from anomalies saying, '@MsLeaSalonga Please name a country that is free from crime, debt, corruption and poverty.' Lea responded, '@tismejason Touché. But how many to the degree that it is here at home? It's scary to think about.'

Meanwhile @ragingbulex commented, '@MsLeaSalonga only stupid people will like this tweet. you're family is not perfect so what's your reason to be proud of them?' Lea tweeted in response, '@ragingbulex Your. Not you're. Before you wipe the dirt off my face, you may wanna look in a mirror at your own.'

Twitter user @kentaryll on the other hand pointed out that Independence day is about celebrating freedom from the colonizers. '@MsLeaSalonga our celebration is about being free from the colonizers, not being free from the major maladies of the country.' Lea commented, '@kentaryll Indeed, we are independent from the colonizers that once lorded over our country. But I can't celebrate just the same. #JustMe.'

Meanwhile Twitter user @jennarationWP commented, '@MsLeaSalonga yung nakakalabas tayo ng walang takot at may kalayaan. I guess doon pa lang Ms Lea ay masasagot na yang katanungan mo.' To which Lea responded, '@jennarationWP Unless you're a journalist always worried that at any given moment you'll be offed by a bullet or two.”
