Asia’s longest-running communist insurgency is reaching the half-century mark. And a storm closes in on the country.

Half-century mark
Today is the 50th anniversary of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), which through its armed wing the New People’s Army (NPA) is fighting Asia’s longest communist insurgency. The occasion comes just as President Duterte ordered the military to destroy the CPP-NPA and its legal fronts. This is sure to set back the peace talks between the two sides some more. Members of the Makabayan bloc warned that the order could send a chilling effect to critics of the government. CPP founder Jose Ma. Sison will be on ANC’s “Early Edition.”

Killing in the name of . . .
Police are still in the thick of the investigation into the killing of AKO Bicol Rep. Rodel Batocabe. They have identified six persons of interest. The family of Batocabe said politics is the likely reason for the killing as Batocabe was set to run for mayor of Daraga town, Albay in next year’s elections. The current mayor has denied politics is the motive for the killing of his rival.

Usman coming
Tropical Depression Usman has entered the country’s area of responsibility. The weather system could hit the Visayas on Friday. ANC will continue to provide updates on this storm.

Bear market
Asian markets slid amid the fall in US markets. Japan’s Nikkei tumbled into bear market territory. ANC’s Business group will continue tracking these developments in the global and local market.

New Year
There’s a rash of shootings and firecracker injuries as the New Year approaches. Health Sec. Francisco Duque called on parents to confiscate firecrackers from their children.
