WEST PHILIPPINE SEA — Naval vessels of the Philippines and the United States on Monday mounted heavy machine guns and fired at a buoy in the West Philippine Sea, east of several shoals being illegally claimed by China, as the Balikatan exercises continued outside the Philippines’ territorial waters.

“We are only allowed to conduct a serial for one hour,” Sandalo said.

The gunnery exercises were held 35 nautical miles from the town of Quezon in Palawan.

The area is adjacent to the Escoda Shoal, the Ayungin Shoal and the Panganiban Reef, areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone but are being surrounded by Chinese naval vessels and maritime militia.

China sent three naval ships, instead of the usual lone vessel, to monitor the exercises some 5 nautical miles away from BRP Davao del Sur, the Philippine Navy’s largest sea craft joining the exercises.
